Sonic Movie Does Better Than Expected

The Sonic The Hedgehog movie broke box office records last week, considering the film was ridiculed when it was announced in May 2019.

The CGI blue furball had people screaming in fear after his first trailer dropped many months ago, pointing out his eyes, teeth and overall appearance. Many fans cried out that it was certain to be a “disaster”, with Jim Carrey being the one to carry the movie from start to finish.

Paramount Pictures and director Jeff Fowler announced that they would delay the movie and re-work Sonic to make him look more like the character in the games and it really paid off.

The film broke records in the United States, making it the highest opening video game movie earning US$57 million, edging out past Pokemon: Detective Pikachu which earned US$54 million. According to Variety, Sonic’s earnings were well above the predicted US$40 million.

Only a few days into the movie’s release, Sonic the Hedgehog raked in a whopping US$111 million with US$43 million being pulled from international markets.

In Australia, it was the highest-grossing movie of last week, taking in AU$3.87 million, surpassing Birds of Prey’s second-week earnings of AU$2.59 million.

The film, which currently has a 63 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, follows Sonic as he tries to explore the complexities of Earth with his newfound friend, Tom Wachokski (played by John Marsden) and tries to survive a villainous pursuit by the deranged Dr Robotnik (played by Carrey).
